Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, and it is becoming a major public health problem in China as well as other parts of the world. The number of patients diagnosed with cancer continues to rise in China. It is demonstrated that the lung cancer ranks as the most predominant cancer, , and the incidence of new cases in China is projected to increase from 500,000 in 2005 to 700,000 by 2020. As reported, half of the world's cases and deaths of liver cancer were estimated to occur in China, with estimated 358,840 new liver cancer cases and 312,432 deaths, respectively, in China in 2010. Some other cancers such as esophageal cancer and breast cancer are also very common in China. Many Chinese researchers are devoted to the cancer research field, promoting novel development of scientific research, including understanding of the biological basis of cancer to help its prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment.
With the objective of facilitating wider global exposure to cutting edge research by Chinese authors, IJC is launching its Chinese Edition-each year focusing on hot topics on cancer research. We hope to attract top-of-the line articles flavored with Chinese scientific features and characteristics. This will open the preferred window to showcase Chinese research achievements to colleagues from the rest of the world. Our journal will become the most convenient high quality platform for rapid publications to Chinese experts. Simultaneously, IJC will also bring international recent advances in cancer research to the doorstep of Chinese counterparts.
The two special topics organized in 2014 are "Minimally invasive cancer therapy" and "Cancer target therapy" and will be the first step to bundle key achievements in cancer prevention and treatment from China. For example, the article by Zhang et al., reported a feasibility study using the submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection for upper gastrointestinal multiple submucosal tumors originating from the muscular propria layer. It is noteworthy that pioneers for this advanced technology hail from Zhongshan Hospital Surgical Endoscopy Center. Additional related material is also available in the two special issues.
We are delighted that this international platform for IJC authors and readers will empower better discussion on science and clinical research regarding cancer, especially the research development in China. Our ultimate objective is to contribute to overall benefit for the patients suffering from cancer.
